2008 Cherry Blossom Festival at Japantown

by Richard Bui • No Comments • Category: General News

I will be attending this year’s Cherry Blossom Festival (April 20, Sunday) to photograph the event. It’s a fun and great event with lots of people who come out. The highlight of this weekend’s festival is the Grand Parade (1:00 PM to 3:00 PM) between Post, Buchanan, and Webster streets which will include cosplayers. Visit the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival website for more information and to download the schedule of events (direct link: page 1 [PDF] and page 2 [PDF]).

Here are a few photos that I took from last year:

USMC: Death Before Dishonor

Just out and about randomly snapping pictures around San Francisco City Hall when I noticed a Marine veteran and his Navy veteran friend conversing. I thought his jacket was cool and would make a cool shot against City Hall, it also gave me an opportunity to thank the brave soldiers.

The 2008 Olympic Torch’s only North American stop is met with Pro-Tibetan protesters and Pro-China supporters. I stopped by ATT park to capture some moments at McCovey Cove and 4th & King. More pics here.

2007 Public Defender Annual Report

2007-annual-report.jpgWe finally completed the 2007 Public Defender Annual Report and it is now available in print or for download on the Public Defender’s website (direct link here, PDF). Overall, I’m happy with the pictures and how it turned out. It’s a completely different direction than the office has done in the past (older annual reports can be downloaded here) in terms of design and layout.

About 90% of the pictures were taken by me with the exception being: the two pictures on page 2, the image on the top of page 7, the images on page 9, and the image on page 11. All the images were taken as an employee for the Office of the Public Defender and not as a contract. The layout was handled by Larry Roberts and Lea Villegas and proof reading by Joan Kruckewitt.

If you have the chance to get an actual copy, I highly recommend it as the PDF does not do it nearly the justice. We already have quite a number of plans for this year’s annual report.

2008 Safety Network Community Leadership

by Richard Bui • No Comments • Category: Event

I shall be photographing the 2008 Safety Network Community Leadership awards ceremony tonight at the State Building on 455 Golden Gate Avenue in the Milton Marks Auditorium. The Safety Network is a coalition of 12 San Francisco community based organizations striving to build capacity, advocate for communities, improve public safety, and improve community access to services.

Guest speak is District 5 Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi with a special performance by West Sunset Rec Connect Steel Pan Drummers. It should be fun.
